Rico Jazz Select Reeds
2011 Cane Comparison - New Reserve Cane vs. Old RJS Cane
Reeds - such a simple concept to some, such a beyond tedious one to others. Reed quality is the largest single complaint that we receive from professional players. They commonly will give us accounts of going through 3+ boxes of reeds and not being able to find a single one that they like and can use. This has driven many players towards the synthetic reeds. While most will admit that they still prefer the performance of a "great cane reed" over that of the synthetic, finding that "great" cane reed is a never ending quest.
So players settle.
Rico, a name that has sadly over the past decade been associated with simply student reeds, has finally listened. Rico was purchased by D'Addario, a major manufacturer of musical products. D'Addario wanted to change what the name Rico means to the player and they knew that the only way to do it was with quality.
Rico has completely changed everything about their reed production process. They brought in state of the art equipment to sort and grade cane as well as better equipment for cutting and producing reeds.
Enter the Rico Reserve product line. The Reserve products from Rico use only the highest quality lower internode cane. This cane is the oldest and densest cane available from the cane chute. By using only this cane, reeds cut from it have better consistency from reed to reed and better overall performance.
Rico Jazz Select reeds are now using this select Reserve Cane.
Want to see the difference for yourself? Take a look below. We took a box of older Rico Jazz Select reeds and a box of the newer reeds using the new cane and compared them side by side for you. Both of these boxes were sealed reeds. Specifically, these are soprano sax unfiled. The old reeds were strength 2S whereas the newer reeds are 2H. You can physically see the inconsistency in color and fibers on the older cane whereas the newer cane is consistently dense in fiber and uniform in cane color. |
